What is phosphoric acid used for?
The main use of phosphoric acid is fertilizer, which consumes about 90% of the output.
food additives
Food grade phosphoric acid is used for acidification of food and beverages, and it provides strong or sour taste. Various phosphates, such as monocalcium phosphate, are used as bulking agents. Phosphoric acid in soft drinks may cause tooth corrosion. Phosphoric acid may also lead to the formation of kidney stones, especially in people who have previously suffered from kidney stones.
Derusting
Phosphoric acid can be used to remove rust by direct application to rusty iron, steel tools, or other surfaces. Phosphoric acid changes reddish brown iron oxide (III) and Fe2O3 (rust) into iron phosphate and FePO4.
Liquid phosphoric acid can be used for impregnation, but phosphoric acid used for rust removal is more often prepared as gel. Different phosphoric acid gel formulations are sold as rust removers. Multiple uses of phosphoric acid may be required to convert all rust. Rust can also be removed by phosphate conversion coating. This process can leave a black phosphate coating, providing medium corrosion resistance.
