1. Industrial Field
(1) Treatment of metal ions
It forms chelates with heavy metal ions Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ ions, e.g., it is used in the treatment of industrial wastewater for the removal of these ions from solution; it is utilized in soap production to reduce water hardness.
(2) Other industrial applications
Used as an oxidizing agent in photography (e.g., iron(III) ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid). Used to treat heavy metals in textiles, to prevent mineral precipitation in petroleum production, and for milk bottle cleaning and exhaust gas (nitrogen oxide) treatment.
2. Food Field
EDTA is used as an antioxidant and quality improver to prevent lipid oxidation and food browning, and to avoid the production of carcinogenic benzene in soda production.
3. Cosmetics Field
It prevents deterioration of cosmetics by chelating metal ions and is used for preservation of cosmetics.
4. Medical Field
Medical grade EDTA can be used as an antidote for heavy metal poisoning, and can be added to blood samples to prevent blood coagulation and assist in examination.
