Application
As a representative of phthalate plasticizers, dibutyl phthalate (DBP, CAS NO.: 84-74-2) once occupied a core position in the polymer industry in the second half of the 20th century due to its excellent molecular compatibility and cost-effectiveness. Its mechanism of action stems from the polarity matching between the ester group and the polymer chain. By inserting between polymer chain segments such as PVC, DBP can reduce the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the material by about 40°C, converting the hard resin into a flexible film. This feature is particularly critical in the artificial leather calendering process: PVC base materials with 15%-20% DBP added can be stretched to 5 times the original length without breaking, and are widely used in the surface treatment of bags and shoes. In the field of nitrocellulose lacquer, its low volatility (vapor pressure of only 0.11Pa/25°C) can slow down the evaporation rate of solvents, give wood coatings better leveling properties, extend the drying time from 15 minutes to 45 minutes, and significantly reduce the formation of brush marks. In special application scenarios, DBP also demonstrates cross-domain functions: the early record industry used its synergistic effect with cellulose acetate to increase the tensile strength of record masters to 280MPa to ensure embossing accuracy; and adding 3%-5% DBP to the adhesive formula can reduce the initial adhesion by 30%, achieving reversible positioning during the assembly of precision electronic components.
