Mannitol is a kind of hexadecene alcohol with a sweet taste. Because it absorbs heat when dissolved and feels comfortable in the mouth, it is widely used in the manufacture of chewable tablets such as hangover medicine and mouth freshener. Its granular form is specially used as an excipient for direct tableting and can be used as a base material for drugs such as nitroglycerin tablets. It can also be used as a raw material for large infusions to produce mannitol injections to reduce intracranial pressure, intraocular pressure and diuresis. It is a filler and excipient for tablets such as anticancer, antibacterial drugs, antihistamines, vitamins, hangover medicine, and fresheners. It is a cerebral vasodilator used to treat cerebral vascular infarction. As a diuretic, mannitol is a mild laxative with special therapeutic effects on oliguria and renal function decline caused by edema and burns.
