Application of Propylene Glycol

Mar 21, 2025

Based on the USP/EP quality standard system, propylene glycol has shown irreplaceable application value in three core sectors, namely food and medicine, daily chemical care, and special industries.

In the field of food processing, propylene glycol has passed FDA 21CFR 184.1666 certification and has been applied across categories as a GRAS-grade additive. In the baking industry, the addition of 0.3-0.5% PG can reduce the water activity (Aw) of pastries by 0.15 and extend the shelf life by more than 30%; in beverage production, its synergistic effect with sorbitol can effectively inhibit sucrose recrystallization, which is particularly critical in the stability control of pulp-containing juices. In terms of pharmaceutical preparations, the United States Pharmacopoeia clearly stipulates that the concentration threshold of PG in topical preparations is 96%, and its transdermal promotion effect increases the bioavailability of diclofenac sodium gel by 22.6%.

The breakthrough of new atomization technology has promoted a fundamental change in the demand structure of PG. According to the Frost & Sullivan report, the global consumption of PG in e-cigarette atomizers will reach 480,000 tons in 2023, accounting for 40.7% of the total basic raw materials. The golden ratio of PG/VG in salt nicotine formula (7:3) has become the industry technical standard. The application of industrial-grade PG is extending from traditional fields to high-tech directions: in the aerospace field, the freezing point inhibition efficiency of PG-based deicing fluid is 18% higher than that of ethylene glycol system, and the corrosion rate of 7075 aviation aluminum is reduced to 0.0025mm/a; in the field of new energy vehicles, its market penetration as a co-solvent for lithium battery electrolyte has exceeded 15%.

The technological breakthrough of bio-based PG has triggered the reconstruction of the industrial chain. Nouryon Chemical's third-generation biocatalytic process realizes the directional conversion of vegetable oils to PG, and the carbon footprint is reduced by 62% compared with the petroleum-based route. The latest amendment to the EU REACH regulation increases the SVHC list exemption concentration of bio-based PG to 5%, which directly stimulates companies such as BASF to invest in the construction of a 100,000-ton annual bio-based PG plant. The global production capacity distribution shows significant regional characteristics: China relies on its coal chemical advantages to form an annual production capacity of 2.8 million tons, and 70% of its products meet medical grade standards; the North American market focuses on the development of PG for e-cigarettes, and the atomization purity index (>99.97%) leads the industry.

The key to industrial upgrading lies in the innovation of application scenarios. Cutting-edge research shows that the plasticizing effect of PG in quasi-solid electrolytes of solid-state batteries can increase ionic conductivity by 3 orders of magnitude, which brings new breakthroughs in the field of new energy storage. With the full implementation of the ISO 16128 international standard, the sustainability assessment system of PG is evolving from a single carbon footprint to a full life cycle assessment (LCA), which will inevitably promote the global PG industry to deeply transform towards green and high-end directions.
