Formic acid, also known as methanoic acid, is a colorless and pungent liquid with a chemical formula of HCOOH. Its name is derived from the Latin word "formica" meaning ant because this acid is found in the venom of certain ant species. It is the simplest carboxylic acid and is widely used in various industrial and chemical processes.


Produced by reacting carbon monoxide with water in the presence of a catalyst. The traditional method of producing formic acid is the carbonylation of methanol. This process involves reacting methanol with carbon monoxide in the presence of a catalyst to form formate esters. These esters are then hydrolyzed to form formic acid. Another method of producing is through the hydrolysis of sodium formate or formamide.It is a highly corrosive liquid that is volatile and flammable. It has a melting point of 8.4°C and a boiling point of 100.8°C. It is miscible in water, ethanol, and ether. The pungent odor and can cause irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract.

 

It is used in the leather and textile industries as a tanning and dyeing agent. It is also used as a preservative in livestock feed, as well as a reducing agent and catalyst in the production of various chemicals such as formamide, acetic acid, and formaldehyde.In the pharmaceutical industry, it is used as a solubilizing agent, acid regulator, and disinfectant. It is also used in the production of perfumes, flavorings, and other aromatics.It has also found extensive use in agriculture as a pesticide. It is used to control the growth of weeds, pests, and diseases in crops. It is also used to treat wood against wood rot, fungi, and insects.
