Precautions for the use of vitamin C
Jul 22, 2025
Vitamin C is often mentioned as a "small guard" in our health protection, but it is by no means a "panacea" that can be taken at will.
From the perspective of function, it shoulders heavy responsibilities: enhancing immunity, helping the body to resist germs; participating in collagen synthesis, relating to the health of skin, bones, and teeth; and resisting oxidation, preventing anemia, and preventing arteriosclerosis.
From the perspective of traditional medicine, its sour taste and cool nature have the function of nourishing Yin, which is suitable for Yin deficiency, but not "cure all diseases".In terms of intake, adults are recommended to supplement 100mg per day, children 75 mg to meet the basic needs, fresh vegetables and fruits are high-quality sources, such as guava, papaya, kiwifruit and so on are rich in VC.
However, there is also an upper limit of tolerance, adults do not exceed 300 mg per day, the maximum tolerance is 2000 mg, which can easily lead to health risks. Contraindications need to be more vigilant: use with caution in patients with kidney stones, gout, gastric ulcer, etc.; taking in large quantities may make some women infertile.Excessive pregnant women can also affect the fetus; children are prone to long-term excessive skeletal diseases, and even the risk of thrombosis will increase due to long-term use of large quantities, vitiligo patients should not take.
At the same time, there are also wrong combinations to avoid when taking, such as not eating with crustacean seafood such as shrimp and crab, not eating on an empty stomach, and not mixing with antacids, sulfonamides and other antibiotics.
Although vitamin C is good, it needs scientific knowledge, reasonable intake and avoidance of taboo minefields to make it truly a health aid, rather than "invisible risk".
