The chemical formula of sodium sulfate is Na2SO4, which has several forms: anhydrous, decahydrate, heptahydrate, and pentahydrate. However, anhydrous form is the most commonly used desiccant as it can effectively remove moisture from liquids. Its mechanism of action is based on the principle of dehydration. In the presence of water, anhydrous sodium sulfate absorbs water through a process called adsorption. This process involves water molecules adhering to the surface of sodium sulfate particles. As more water molecules are adsorbed, sodium sulfate particles begin to form hydrated crystals, which can be easily filtered or removed from the liquid. Once a hydrated crystal is formed, anhydrous sodium sulfate can no longer adsorb water molecules, as all available attachment sites on the particle surface have already been occupied by water molecules. This means that anhydrous sodium sulfate has reached its maximum water absorption capacity and is no longer effectively removing water from the liquid.
The hydrated crystals of sodium sulfate are easily distinguished from the anhydrous form because they are usually white and powdery, while the anhydrous form is usually crystalline and granular. In addition, hydrated crystals are highly soluble in water, while anhydrous forms are not. In industrial applications, anhydrous sodium sulfate is commonly used as a drying agent for solvents, as well as in the production of detergents and glass. In the laboratory, it is often used to purify organic compounds and remove water from chemical reactions.
